How it all began...

The Fountain Trust Pipe Band began in the Summer of 1999 with five pipers meeting informally in each other's homes to practice together. Shortly thereafter, desiring a purpose for the practice sessions, the original five pipers decided to form a formal band. At about the same time, the Fountain Trust Company, an independent community bank from Covington, Indiana, was looking for a mascot of sorts for marketing purposes. The bank's president offered to sponsor the band if the band would represent the band at local parades, festivals, and other events. The bank provided the pipers with uniforms - Campbell of Argyll kilts, dress jackets, and all the trimmings. In December of 1999, the 'fab five' performed at the bank's annual Christmas party. Thus, the Fountain Trust Pipe Band was born. The band then went through a period of growth and development to recruit new members. Almost all new members were taught from scratch. The band also decided to compete at highland games as the best way of measuring its progress and improvement from year to year and so joined the Midwest Pipe Band Association in Grade V. In 2007, the band captured Champion Supreme for Grade V and moved up to Grade IV.

In addition to the competitions, the band represents the Fountain Trust Company at a wide variety of parades and concerts throughout the year. Since its beginning in 1999, the band has also performed at the boys state basketball championship at the Conseco Fieldhouse, played with massed bands at the half-time show for the Bengal's opening season football game in Cincinnati, Ohio, marched in the 500 Festival Parade in Indianapolis in May, 2003, and performed at the Bloomington Scottish Society Burns Supper in Bloomington, Indiana. The band has also become a regular performer at the Columbus, Indiana, Scottish Festival in September.

Practices are held on Sundays in Mellott, Indiana, as it is the most central location for all members. Because the band is based in a rural area, membership comes from all over, including Lafayette, Covington, Crawfordsville, Rockville, Terre Haute, Danville (IL), and as far South as Bloomington, Indiana.

The Fountain Trust Pipe Band is dedicated to becoming a strong competition pipe band. We also take very seriously our commitment to representing the Fountain Trust Company to the public. To this end, the band expects members to attend as many practices as possible and practice regularly at home. Workshops are also held every six months with Maureen Connor and Eric MacNeill, both professional-level players with the Oran Mor pipe band in New York. In the belief that strong individual players make a strong band, the band encourages (but does not require) its members to compete individually. Many members do compete individually in Grades IV through I.

Whether you are an experienced piper or drummer or someone who is interested in pipe band music, we invite you to come to a practice to meet us.
